Flush tank malfunctions: what they are and how to fix them

The most common problems that arise during long-term use of the toilet usually concern the flush tank. Despite the simplicity of the device, its repair can take a lot of time. This review will help you fix the flush tank quickly and for a long time, but before you get to work, let's figure out how the mechanism works.

The operating principle of the toilet cistern
The principle is simple: after pressing the button on the tank, the drain hole closes liquid starts to fill the tank. The liquid level inside is controlled by a float – it rises as the amount of water in the tank increases. As soon as this level reaches the “maximum” mark, the inlet pipe is closed by a piston – water stops flowing into the tank.

\The problem described above occurs when the narrowed part of the valve gets clogged. The situation can be easily corrected: drain the water from the tank and remove the valve (and the float too), clean the narrow opening with a needle or wire.

The remaining debris should be removed by unscrewing the valve of the inlet pipe. As soon as you see that the water is pouring into the container at a normal rate, tighten the valve and fix the parts back.

Water continuously flows into the tank
The reason for this unpleasant phenomenon may be as follows:

The float lever position has changed. To repair the tank, it is enough to adjust the lever.
The float has lost its tightness . When water gets inside the float, it sinks (does not stay on the surface). To repair the tank, you just need to replace the float.
The float valve is broken . The valve will have to be completely replaced.
Water is leaking onto the floor
If puddles of water appear on the floor near the toilet, the sealing ring (located between the bowl and the tank) is worn out. It needs to be replaced - remove the lid, fittings and dismantle the tank.

Sometimes it is enough to tighten the fasteners. If this does not help, remove the tank, change the seal and gaskets:

Shut off the fluid supply and drain it from the tank.
Remove the flexible water supply.
Remove the tank lid and set it aside.
Remove the seal and clean its seat.
Fix the new part and install the tank.
Tighten the fasteners.
Connect the supply line and open the access to liquid.
The gaskets are replaced in the same way.

The toilet makes noise when the tank is filling
Traditionally, the problem occurs in tanks with top connection. Evaluate the inlet, adjust its diameter. If this does not work, take a plastic (rubber) tube (its diameter should match the size of the hole). The length of the tube is 25-30 cm.

Place the part on the inlet, secure it, lower the other end of the tube to the bottom of the container. The noise will be less pronounced, since the water will flow through the tube.

The flush tank fittings are defective – how to replace them?
To replace worn-out fittings, follow the following algorithm:

Drain the water and shut off the water supply to the tank.
Remove the container, unscrew the water supply tap, then the fittings.
Remove the old part and secure the new one.
Attention! Do not forget to replace the gasket that is fixed between the toilet and the cistern.

All that remains is to secure the float and adjust the filling level of the container.

How to "save" a cistern with two buttons
If the flush mechanism with two buttons is broken, most likely the problem is that the buttons are stuck. You just need to remove the cover and install the buttons in the correct position.

Repair of a tank with a bottom water supply
The cause of problems in this case may be the incorrect location of the inlet fittings. It should be adjusted so that no part touches the walls of the tank.

If there are serious problems with the drain tank, you should call a plumber.
